Surry Hills Project

Context and Objectives

 This thoughtfully designed home was created with the intention of maximising spatial perception while introducing strong character and warmth. The client’s brief focused on incorporating natural timber elements to enrich the interior, creating a kitchen that felt inviting, textural, and visually engaging within a more restrained footprint.  The key challenge was to enhance the sense of space within a modestly scaled layout while maintaining functionality and ensuring the design felt open, cohesive, and uncluttered. It was important to balance warmth and material richness with clean lines and efficient use of space. 

Design and Functionality

The kitchen design introduces a layered material palette of rich timber detailing, sophisticated charcoal cabinetry, and crisp stone benchtops to achieve a refined yet welcoming aesthetic. This combination creates contrast while maintaining visual harmony throughout the space.

A generously sized island with integrated seating was incorporated as a central feature, providing a multifunctional hub for daily living, entertaining, and connection. The timber backdrop extends the visual depth of the space, enhancing warmth and drawing the eye through the kitchen to improve the perception of openness.

Sleek cabinetry, integrated appliances, and carefully selected finishes were used to ensure the kitchen remains highly functional while maintaining a clean and streamlined appearance.

Execution and Impact

 The completed kitchen is a thoughtfully resolved space that feels both spacious and intimate. The considered layering of timber, stone, and dark cabinetry creates a distinctive design identity, while the open layout and central island enhance usability and flow. The result is a well-proportioned kitchen tailored to support modern living with warmth and sophistication.
